David Brookes has been Musical Director of the Brewood Singers since January 1978 and has overseen the development of The Singers from a village group to an established regional choir.
David was born in Birmingham (1951) and was brought up in Tipton and Wednesfield, Wolverhampton. After studying in Oxford, David returned to Wolverhampton as Head of Music at St Peter's Collegiate School (September 1973 - December 1978) and then as Head of Music at Bishop Vesey's Grammar School (January 1979 - August 1991). He is at present Curriculum Co-ordinator of Music at Cockshut Hill Technology College where he has been since September 1991.
David has always taken a keen interest in choral music and has been choirmaster and organist at two churches in Wednesfield. He was 17 when he became church organist at S.S. Augustine & Chad, Wednesfield, and became choirmaster as well 12 months later, moving to St. Alban's Church after returning to Wolverhampton. He is currently choirmaster and organist at the Abbey Church of St Editha, Polesworth (since October 1979).
As well as being a pianist and organist, David also describes himself as an 'out of practice' clarinettist. Although choral conducting is his main musical interest these days, David has conducted a variety of other musical ensembles, and is no stranger to conducting operettas and musicals etc., and at organising concerts and conducting various other ensembles.
David is married to Carol (who is also a member of the Singers). They have three children: Ruth, Thomas and Anna. David and Carol have lived in Polesworth, North Warwickshire since getting married in August 1979. David's principal interest is music and he is a committed member of the Anglican church. Apart from this he is also a keen caravanner and enjoys travelling especially to the warmer climates of Europe - particularly Provence in France.
